Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
